The North Carolina Guardianship Association (NCGA) recently hosted its 2023 Annual Conference at Carolina Beach, NC from May 3-5. The event provided an opportunity for legal professionals to network with their peers, participate in workshops, and attend educational sessions. Attendees learned about industry trends and innovative practices to use in their guardianship practices.
The conference covered a range of important issues including the updated national standards and rights of adults under guardianship, coordinating support for supported decision making, court guardianship diversion programs, and many other crucial matters.
A standout presentation at the conference was delivered by Johnston Allison Hord attorney Nicki Engel. She discussed Senate Bill 308 and how it seeks to limit and improve guardianships for people with disabilities and older adults. The bill aims to ensure that guardianship is used only when it is absolutely necessary and that it is tailored to the individual’s specific needs. In addition to presenting at this year’s conference, Nicki is also a North Carolina Guardianship Association Board Member.
