Partner Susanne Todd and summer associate Ben Hopkins recently spoke at the National Business Institute (NBI): North Carolina Land Use and Zoning from Start to Finish Seminar. The virtual seminar held on July 25, 2023 facilitated a comprehensive understanding of the approval processes and the regulatory framework. Participants, including legal practitioners, contractors, designers, developers, and real estate professionals, had the opportunity to gain valuable knowledge while earning continuing education credits.
Susanne and Ben’s presentation, titled “Challenging/Defending the Constitutionality of Zoning and Land Use Actions,” explored key legal issues in the field. They covered takings without just compensation, due process challenges, equal protection challenges, and property rights and limitations on police power. Other presentations at the seminar addressed variances, conditional use permits, zoning ordinance and map amendments, and appealing zoning decisions.
